The 47 mm Garmin Approach S72 is the full-size version of Garmin's flagship golf GPS smartwatch, with a 1.4" AMOLED display and up to 16 days of battery life. It is the first Approach watch to measure your swing and your heart rate alongside your yardages, pairing 43,000+ preloaded courses with on-wrist swing metrics, post-round biometric review and green reading in a 48 g titanium and sapphire case.

Available in two colors: Carbon Gray with a red DLC titanium bezel and black band, or Silver with a citron titanium bezel and fog gray/citron band.

Swing metrics and golf biometrics

The S72 records hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation, hand plane and swing tempo, both on the course and in a dedicated driving range activity that logs every swing of a practice session. After a round, golf biometric data sets your heart rate against your shots, so you can see whether the pressure holes are the ones costing you strokes.

Course data: 43,000+ courses, green reading and aerial imagery

• Front, middle and back yardages, plus layups, doglegs, hazards and touch targeting on full vector course maps
• PlaysLike Distance adjusts each yardage for elevation and conditions
• Virtual Caddie suggests a club from wind, elevation and your own swing data (wind needs a paired smartphone)
• Green reading shows your aim point on select courses once the pin is set
• Aerial imagery gives a real view of the hole for planning layups and safe misses
• Green contours and putting analysis across single and multiple rounds
• AutoShot tracking, digital scorecard, handicap and Stableford scoring, and scramble mode
• Tournament legal with tournament mode enabled
• Compatible with Approach CT1 and CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)

Green reading, aerial imagery, green contours and putting analysis require an active Garmin Golf membership.

Calls, flashlight and everyday health tracking

This is the first Garmin golf watch with a built-in speaker and microphone: take calls from your wrist when paired with your phone, and control the watch by voice. A built-in LED flashlight with adjustable white and red light helps you find gear in the bag at dusk.

Off the course it is a full Garmin smartwatch, with wrist heart rate, Pulse Ox, Body Battery, sleep coaching, HRV status, training readiness, the Garmin ECG app (availability varies by region), multi-band GPS, built-in color maps, music storage, Garmin Pay and 64 GB of memory. It carries a 5 ATM water rating.

Is 47 mm the right size?

The 47 mm case fits wrists from 154 to 229 mm and takes 22 mm QuickFit bands. It has the larger display and the longer battery life of the two S72 sizes: up to 16 days as a smartwatch and up to 20 hours in golf mode. For a slimmer wrist, the 43 mm Approach S72 has the same features in a lighter 41 g case.

Approach S72 or Approach S70?

Choose the S72 if you want swing metrics, post-round heart-rate review, green reading, aerial imagery, wrist calls or the flashlight, or if you prefer the lighter titanium build (48 g against 56 g at 47 mm). Choose the Approach S70 if course maps, Virtual Caddie and PlaysLike Distance cover what you need and you would rather spend less; the 47 mm S70 matches the S72 on battery life.
