A short throw projector creates a large image from a short distance, which is exactly what a simulator bay needs. Mount a standard projector far enough back to fill the screen and it ends up behind the golfer, throwing a shadow across the picture on every swing. A short throw model hangs from the ceiling near the hitting position, clear of the club and out of the ball's path.
Work out your mounting distance
Multiply the width of your impact screen by the projector's throw ratio. With a 0.5 throw ratio, a 12-foot-wide screen fills from about 6 feet away. With a 0.8 ratio the same screen needs about 9.6 feet. Check that distance against where you stand to hit and where the ceiling allows a mount.
Details that make setup easier
- Zoom range gives you some forgiveness if the ideal mounting spot is taken by a joist or light.
- Lens shift and keystone correction help square the image, though a correctly placed projector always looks sharpest.
- Brightness should suit the room: larger screens and brighter rooms need more lumens.
