An overhead launch monitor mounts to the ceiling above the hitting area and tracks every shot from above. Nothing sits on the floor, so there is nothing to bump, realign or step around, and right- and left-handed golfers can share the same bay without moving equipment. That makes overhead units a favorite for dedicated simulator rooms, teaching studios and commercial venues.
Every overhead unit has a required mounting height and a set position relative to the hitting zone. Measure your ceiling height, note any beams, lights or garage door tracks, and compare against the installation guide before ordering. A ceiling drop-mount kit can help position a compatible unit correctly when the ceiling is higher than the recommended mounting height.
Overhead systems are wired, permanent installations. You will typically need power at the ceiling, a cable run to a simulator computer and a projector positioned so it does not block the unit's view of the hitting area. Sorting out those positions on paper first saves a lot of ladder time.
Choose overhead if the bay is permanent and shared. If you also want to practice at the range, or you are not ready to commit to a fixed install, a portable launch monitor is the more flexible choice. You can see both types side by side in launch monitors.
